Hi I need some help but could not find the right form.
I have windows XP home. I got it with my dell laptop. But a MONTH after i got it. I dropped it and its done for. It hit hard and dell wont fix it. I built a computer from parts at school and yardsales. Now i put XP on and i cant register because it says that its already been registered. Well yes. On the dell that no longer works nor exists anymore for that matter. I tried to put that hard drive onm the PC with an adapter I got on EBAY but that failed. So i want to put XP on the desktop. Is there a way to have microsoft do this. They wanted to charge me. All i want to use the software i bought. I have all info for it... THANKS....

I think you may have to purchase a Retail version of XP because of OEM licence restrictions. If you have an old 98 or ME CD you can use that as a Qualifying Product and purchase an Upgrade version of XP (which will do everything the Full version does) and save you about $100.

Should you purchase an OEM license version of XP?

yes there is!
You have to call microsoft's toll free # and tell them about it.
they will "dead" the nic address, and then they will give you another product key.
I did it before!

I suspect linney is right on this one: the Dell OEM license is not transferable to another hardware device.

Moreover, the Dell XP installation disk will not work on non-Dell computers, it is BIOS locked.

Sorry but the name of the thread does not fit to the content of the post. It should be called something like "Re-activating XP" or "How to use XP in another computer" or whatever. But the "registry" is not the same as registering XP.
