I just downloaded a trial version of Registry Mechanic, which apparently finds about 300 errors in a recently reloaded w2k system registry. Does anyone have any experience with this or other programs? How much caution is called for here (besides the obvious..backing everything up) and how useful are they?

Well, a short reply here: they might be useful to remove unused registry keys (eg. because of badly removed software). The only problems that I heard about were -obviously- all that one or another key too much was deleted.

Peace,

jlockley,

An excellent question for which there is no excellent answer. I have ended up in the camp that argues you leave the registry alone. I do however argue strongly that you do a proper registry backup. The freeware tool ERUNT is my weapon of choice:
I also use NTREGOPT from the same source.

Thanks to both of you. I tend towards the "ain't broke, don't fix" school.

This, oddly, a recently installed system on a new drive(about two months), forced by an automatic Microsoft update gone terribly awry. (I understand that this is quite common).

I may have removed one or the other item, but nothing which would cause 300 errors.

The input is much appreciated.

I like the Windows Update feature, but I have never had a positive experience allowing MS to update my video, NIC or sound card.

So I just say no.

What Microsoft is trying to do is just too dificult to do well. I have no problem with security updates, but I would rather leave my device drivers up to me to keep current.

One man's vote.

Bill
