Hi all,

first off, I'm running XP Pro SP 1, athlon 500, Asus K-7 mobo, 80gig HD, nvidia geforce MX 420 video card

I recently started my machine and logged in, only to find a blank error message box with nothing but a red X and an ok button to push. This took me back to the logon screen. After testing many things with my IT guy, we finally ended up doing a repair installation of windows. I went back through and did all of my updates (although I didn't have to update the service pack, which I thought was odd), including video drivers, etc...

So far so good, but a few times now, when I start up the machine, I get an information dialogue box that says "One of the files containing the System Registry had to be recovered from a log or alternate copy. The recovery was successful."

Now, since this recovery was successful, I'm not sure if I should be thankful or concerned. Why is the registry needing to be recovered if I just did a repair installation? Is this a sign of a corrupt registry? Shouldn't that have been fixed in the repair installation?

My machine is about 5 years old (built with a friend, zero tech support). The components are working fine, but I'm afraid that the motherboard might be failing...

Any thoughts or suggestions??? Greatly appreciated!!!

-Thanks much!
Jessica

doesn't sound like a motherboard problem. Might just be a corupt registery key. Try running a program called easy clean, this will delete any dead registy links etc. Also run spyware. hope this helps

Those links will all help for future reference everyone, Thanks!

As for now, I only received the "registry had to be recovered..." message a total of 2 times. Since then, I have gone back through windows update, updated my video and monitor drivers, as well as any program updates I needed, and run spybot and adaware.

Well, <knocking on wood>, I haven't had any problems since doing all of these. My only issue now is that since repair installing windows, I can't get back into the workgroup I was in. I can still get on the internet, print to networked computers, but I can't get into see other networked computers. This, I believe, is a job for my IT person.

Thanks again everyone for all your help!
