Registrating a server - newbe

I'm just getting started with sql 7.0. I'm running win 98 and pws. When I try to register a server I get an error message ConnectionOpen (connect())... I would appreciate some tips on how to get this going. The books not a lot of help (big surprise). Thanks G. Force (wwda-tx@bigfoot.com)<br>


 
I am having the same problem. I have worked with SQL 7.0 at work, but never had to install it/set up the database server. I think there is something wrong with my ODBC connection. I have been researching in deja.com and swynk.com, and am pretty sure that:<br>
<br>
1. you have to have TCP/IP, not "named pipes" set as connection type, and<br>
<br>
2. you have to register the server as . or (local)<br>
<br>
but I still can't connect. Please let me know if you figure it out.
 
I finally got mine to connect. I had a bad install disk & didn't get SQL Service Manager installed! When I reinstalled SQL 7.0, went into Service Manager and turned on the service, it worked! I can log on to the server with Query Analyzer, using
 
(hopgal, continued) I can log on to my local server with Query Analyzer, using the username &quot;sa&quot; and no password.
