I read that in the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\current_version_policies\system I can change some of the options for users. However In Win XP home I can't find the setting \system. Why isn't it there in win XP but it is there in 98se. I tryed using it on a limited account, still not there, nor is it there on a admin account.

Help!!!

There is nothing of interest there. They deal with seldom used GPO settings for the security logon screen. The entries in their entirety:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\system\\(default)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\system\\dontdisplaylastusername
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\system\\legalnoticecaption
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\system\\legalnoticetext
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\system\\shutdownwithoutlogon
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\system\\undockwithoutlogon

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\system]
"dontdisplaylastusername"=dword:00000000
"legalnoticecaption"=""
"legalnoticetext"=""
"shutdownwithoutlogon"=dword:00000001
"undockwithoutlogon"=dword:00000001

If you want to merge the home system key with your registry you can copy the above to Notepad and change the .txt extension to .reg and then merge it.

I know what I can do there, the problem is that I don't have a "there

Forget about it, or put it there yourself, or repair windows, probably by a complete clean install as the repair option may not fix Registry errors.

As to why it is missing (or what else is missing) may be due to some type of corruption or even operator error. The reason may never be known.
