I've never actually seen a flash card go bad. I re-use flash cards from systems I've upgraded all the time. I have a collection of 2, 4, 8, and 16 MB flash cards that I use to back up customer translations so I can re-create their switch in my lab for upgrades and additions.

schned99 - were those avaya formatted? Im wondering what program i'd need to format my own avaya memcards? The fact that they're proprietary and charge $800 for a $30 card just apalls me.

if you do a search for "flash" you will find several postings about this topic. There was one posting that said you could format your cards in your switch if you can get into your switch with craft-type access.
If you can afford a little down time, the recommendation was that you reboot your switch with no flash card and it would boot up in default mode, format your card and reboot with the flash card in.
Mind you I've not tried this, so if you do happen to try it, i'd love to hear about it as I'm pretty unhappy about paying 800 bucks for a 30 $ card too!
You must not format your system's flashcard but only a spare flashcard. You boot up again with the system's flashcard not the spare one or you will lose translations and the license (customer's-options) of the system! (the formated flashcard is completely empty, no customer-options open!)
The idea ForeFan mentioned would work with Definity R7 and backwords but the "format card" command has been removed from service level logins since R8 (or R9 if I can remember correctly). If you reboot with no flashcard, even if you have 'craft' level access, you cannot use the command (you probably need 'init' level access).
From R9 and on the only way to get a flashcard that works with Definity is to buy it from Avaya...
I have seen many flashcards gone bad since R10. No special reasons, they just appear to become "unformatted" after a short period of use. The only way to solve this is to request a replacement from Avaya...
