Hi all! Right now, my priv.edb and priv.stm total about 14.7 GB's. I am planning on applying SP2 to up the storage limit but I wanted to test it in our lab first and I need to buy some time. I know there is a kb article showing how to up the size an extra GB...

I moved a few mailboxes to a different exchange server that were quite large but it didn't seem to reduce the size...It is still 14.7GB's. Do I need to go in some how and defrag/compress the database since I moved those mailboxes over?

Thanks!

Whilst faq10-6005 is 5.5, many of the principles are the same in 2K3.

Thanks for the quick responxe zbnet...

The article mentions: "Both Standard and Enterprise limit the size a single *.edb file can grow to." This makes it sound like the priv.edb can reach 16 GB's...

But according to the KB artice (828070), it states:

The 16-GB size limit for the Exchange private mailbox store database and the 16-GB size limit for the Exchange public mailbox store database is the "SUM" of the size of both the Priv.edb and the Priv.stm files.

So I guess I'm a little confused...One place says the limit is the size of the .edb file and another says it's the size of both the .edb and .stm files...

Regardless, I need to apply SP2...But I was just trying to figure out where I was in relation to that 16 GB limit...

Thanks in advance!

My FAQ faq955-5581 walks through the steps for repairing the database, part of which is the defrag.

basically you need to dismount the stores.
run ESEUTIL /MH Priv1.edb
run ESEUTIL /MH Pub1.edb
verify no logs are needed
delete *.log
run ESEUTIL /D Priv1.edb
remount your stores.

That is it.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Mark

Thanks markdmac! So is the limit on the sum of the priv files or the .edb file itself?

In 5.5, you only have a priv.edb file, limited to 16GB.
In 2K3, you have a priv.edb and a priv.stm, and the combined size is limited to 16GB (standard, SP1), 75GB (standard, SP2), or 16TB (enterprize).

Public stores follow the same schema, so on a standard server you can have one priv and one pub database (made up of the 2 files on 2003), and each seperate database has their own limits.

zbnet is correct. The edb and stm combined make up your limit. The STM fil is the file used for incoming mail. Normally all mail moves out of this file unless your users check their mail with a non MAPI client. So if they use OWA to initially read new messages, those messages will stay there in the STM file.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Mark
