We are Windows 2000 AD Native mode. All PCs are Windows 2000 Pro. Users connect to network with roaming profiles and have redirected folders - desktop and programs to a network drive.

The problem is that if we ever have any network problem, even if a quick loss of connectivity - like a cable was wiggled in the switch closet, all users lose their desktop icons and have to logoff and log back on to get them back. A refresh does not work.

How can we set it up so that users will never lose the icons on their desktop in the event they lose network connectivity. We want to keep these desktop icons on the network.

Thanks - Kristi

You could set the redirected folders to be available offline. They would actually be using the redirected versions unless connectivity was lost, then the files would be synced up when the connection came back.

I am not that familiar with offline files, except I know I turned it off in group policy. I don't want the users to see the offline folder synch when they log on or off.

Am I able to only perform the offline for the redirected desktop and nothing else? Is there a way to do this that the users will not know or see the synch?

You can turn off the sync at logoff in group policy and the only time they would sync then is if they had to be used offline and then the online location became available again.
