Redacting in acrobat 8

Does the redaction tool truly remove the information permanently? Or does it just cover it up?

I need to permanently remove it so it is not recoverable.

Any Thoughts.

...once you 'apply' redaction in acrobat 8, it replaces the selected objects with a black compound shape, even when editing this area in pitstop pro there is no longer any original content revealed...

...this process of redaction is permanent, unless you have a saved copy to revert to...
