Computer will not recover from standby mode with usual touch of keyboard or movement of mouse. Computer can still be heard running but cannot be revived, requiring that the power be cut and computer restarted. Would appreciate any suggestions for overcoming this glitch.

Has this always been the case or is this just something that recently started to occur? Are there any errors in the Event Logs that may provide some information about the failed standby recoveries? If you have any USB devices plugged into the computer, remove them before you wake your PC back up and see if it will come to. Make sure your computer is up to date with all OS patches and service packs. You may also want to look into updating your system BIOS. See if you can find some help in this article.

You may also want to check out the device drivers installed on your system and make sure that none of these are causing this problem.
