One of our staff recently ran into a boot problem with their laptop (Windows 2000 Professional with an NTFS file system). Minimally, they need me to recover several local data files onto removable media.
Since they didn't have an ERD disk to boot from, and not being able to successfully boot using the last known good configuration or using Safe Mode, I booted into Recovery Console.
I then navigated to and copied several of the data files to floppy a:. The remaining problem is due to the fact that some data file are slightly larger than 1.44 MB.
Since Recovery Console does not appear to support the running of any executables other than the built-in console commands, I was unable to run any file compression program (e.g. PKZip) to reduce the file size to less than 1.44 MB.
One test initially looked promising when I discovered that attaching a USB floppy drive caused the necessary USB files to auto-install while rebooting into repair mode. Once back into the Recovery Console I was able to copy local files onto this new USB floppy device. However, since I was still limited to 1.44 MB, I had to take the next step.
We purchased an external USB hard drive and attached it to the same USB port I had used to successfully test the USB floppy drive. I then rebooted into repair mode, hoping that any driver support was already installed or would be automatically installed as it had with the USB floppy device. Unfortunately it didn't and the hard drive was not recognized.
Does anyone have any other ideas as to how I might recover these last few data files, each of which are approximately 1.6 MB in size ?
Thanks in advance for your help.
