Recently added a new 30 gig h/d to 1

Recently added a new 30 gig h/d to a gateway unit formated the harddrive and it took 2 1/2 hours for the o/s to load, I figure is because it only had 64mb ram that this was causing the delay, upgrade it ram to 192mb and still running slow. The Performance Tab is running at 95% but is running like a turtle. Any Ideas?? Can anyone suggest Software Diagnostics Utilies that can help me find the problem if is hardware related. I heard that gateways have Bios issues and therefore when doing a fresh installed it has to be flashed.

What's the spec of machine?
What did it run like with old drive? - Was it running ME previously? (If so, shouldn't need bios upgrade).
Did you get any errors during ME setup?
How did you run the setup?
Are there any problems in device manager? (devices with no drivers installed, ? ! etc)
What speed is drive interface (eg ATA33, 66, 100) - does bios support drive's full interface speed - and what is it showing connecting at on POST?

found the problem!! it turns out that the boot sequence was all mess up. also found dma were unchecked at both the cd & hard-drive. Thanks for all your help.
