We have set up a Sonicwall 2040 and everything works as normal except for receiving mail. We are using Exchange 2000. Sending mail is fine, internet access is fine too.
For some reason we cannot receive mail.
All features work perfectly through a normal router. It only changes when we substitute the router with the Sonicwall.
Maybe there's a port setting we are missing.

Yes thanks Mike
We're pretty sure we've got most of the protocols and ports right but think there must be something else that we're not aware of.

What Mike pointed out is all you need. You need to add an access rule, and choose "allow > Send E-Mail(smtp)"; from WAN, *, to LAN > IP address of mail server. That's all that is required.

Also, in addition to above, add HTTPS access if you're using OWA.

They are good suggestions. Even though we're sure we've got SMTP working we're going to double check. I'll let you know how we go.

Kev-

If you don't have it configured this way, it won't work. This is the way to configure SMTP inbound traffic on a SonicWall. If you created any other rule, or altered the default rule, or used a different rule... then it's not correct. I can assure you this is how to enable it- I've done it on many, many locations.
