Clean install of 2k-pro beside 98 on a slow box with marginal ram. Every start of 2k loops back to reboot too fast to catch the BSOD I know is hiding there.

Can't get the OS up to disable the auto-restart option, and safemode start goes the same loop. Enable Boot log option doesn't generate ntbtlog.txt and no evidence of a minidump file anywhere. Flyin' Blind! Planning to futz with the bios tomorrow night, but any suggestions prior to taking a hammer to the motherboard (I told 'em they needed a new one) would be appreciated. Might be able to resolve it if I can generate any info. Any way to boot with out the splash screen? Ah well least they can still logon the system via 98 .

Thanks,
David

Any chance that any ACPI settings were changed in the bios after installing 2k-pro? Was your clean install performed from am image or from a standard setup CD? You might try a repair of the installation by booting to the installation CD and choosing the repair option. Kevin Mattson

No changes to bios yet. Install was direct from cd with no problems until first boot. No repair disk for install as never able to get into os. Repair option from direct cd boot with r switch cant find windows install and refuses to proceed without repair disk. Found machine on network with same bios (have not checked settings yet) that loaded and runs 2k no problem. Have a seagate tape drive on the problem machine that I have reservations about. May try disableing secondary master (tape drive only device on secondary) in bios and reinstall. Physical removal of TD
also an option. Can't get on the system to play till after office hours so any suggestions prior appreciated.

Thanks,
David

My clean install of Win 2000 did a similar thing, and it seems that it was to do with the hardware in my case, I did a clean install from a CD,that worked fine with one monitor, but strangely enough, wouldn't get past the Starting Windows screen with another monitor, but powered down into sleep mode. I put the offending monitor on another machine, with Win 98, which promptly found a new driver and installed it, but am not sure why the windows 2000 machine couldn't, or why it reacted as it did. The Windows 2000 machine also works fine with another monitor, so I am assuming it was a hardware problem, I don't understand why it went into powersaving mode though, I checked the BIOS on another machine and all the settings are identical.

Both machines are working now, although I am not sure what happened

Seems to be a common response to hdwr glitches. Am back to it for the evening and will post anything I find out as possible help in the future. If removing the tape drive doesn't do it will probably bite the bullet for a new board
and adequate mem.

Wish me luck, I'm goin' in.
