I am having a brain fade or something as I am stumped on this question.

Why isn't Folder Options showing a "File Types" tab?

A friend of mine is wanting to assign a file type to a certain software.

Her system is a stand alone with Windows 98 as the OS.

However, she is goes to Folder options she finds no "File Types" tab. The only tabs available are "View" and "General"

(now all of my pc's of various OS's 98, 2000 and XP I can view this tab when I bring up Folder options from, Contol Panel and the top tool bars from every window type)

If anyone can assist, it would be so greatly appreciated

Many Thanks

I don't remember this being there, but an article insists you can also get there this way...

Click Start, point to Settings, click Folder Options, and then click the File Types tab.

I've always gotten there via View>Options.

Are there any other oddities with that computer?

Me too! :) It is just not there... How strange, I had her try via Settings, Control Panel, Explorer and View (from the tool bar) Show all hidden files is selected in the view section as well..

Still Stumped.... Where could it be??

You didn't answer my other question.

Sorry Matt!!

No, other issues going on... it just came about with her just wanting to assign graphic extensions to another already existing software.. i.e. images were opening in paint and she wanted them to open in PSP (her user level experience I would rate as intermediate)

I looked in MS support as well did a google search to no avail.

I personally have never seen this before ... and very curious about it now..:)

Appreciating all advice given :)

Hold the shift key, and right click on one of the files. You should get an open with option. Click that, and you'll get a list of programs. Select the program that you want it to use, and choose the option to always use the selected program. Should fix it.

Thanks Matt,

We are in sinc <grin> as I just did tell her to do the same thing.. :)

However....as there are no administrative/or users restrictions/other applied to the system, I still wonder why this "File Types" tab does not display itself in "Folder Options"...and what needs to be done for it to do so. There has to be something that is preventing this tab from being viewed as an option.

Thanks again and still seeking info :)

Hello tpike,

This kind of anomalies often relates to IE version/active desktop etc. Often an IE repair might do the job. A simplified diagnostic other than version checking is out-there and endured testing. So check the following data, see if it differs from the setting in your box.
Code:
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{B091E540-83E3-11CF-A713-0020AFD79762}]
@="File Types Page"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{B091E540-83E3-11CF-A713-0020AFD79762}\InProcServer32]
@="C:\\WINDOWS\\SYSTEM\\SHELL32.DLL"
"ThreadingModel"="Apartment"
Now the InProcServer32 may vary according to IE version
Code:
IE4.1 might be
@="C:\\WINDOWS\\SYSTEM\\SHDOCVW.DLL"
IE5.0? might be
@="C:\\WINDOWS\\SYSTEM\\SHDOC401.DLL"
IE5.5 (as I used in above)
@="C:\\WINDOWS\\SYSTEM\\SHELL32.DLL"

If it differs, save the existing setting first and then you might consider importing the above with the default InProcServer32 varying according to your version of IE, just to test if the anomaly is corrected. This is reversable. If you feel uncomfortable, you can always restore the saved setting and proceed for further investigation.

This fixed it for me after a 98lite shell swap I had the same problem, for WIN9x and IE 4/5 combo:

Go to Start Run and:

for WIN95 w/IE4 type:
regsvr32.exe /i shdocvw.dll

for WIN98 w/IE5 type:
regsvr32.exe /i shdoc401.dll

No reboot/logout was nessacery :)

As a side note to last post:

I had originally checked for the CLSID that tsuji mentioned, it was not there, so i added it with the appropriate DLL entry, that alone didnt work, then i did the regsvr32 trick and all was good... till i went back and deleted the key from the registry... it would seem i needed both tsuji and my fix :p
