I'm buying a used computer. They were demostrating the read/writeable when it kept locking up the computer. It's a HP 7100. I believe this to be a software problem, but could it also be a hardware problem?? What else should I look for??

if the software was adaptec cd creator, it was probably that, but they may have had duff disks.

usually writers either work / or not

nicky@i-c-solutions,
I'm not familar with the term "duff disk". Did you mis-spell it or could you explain, please??

Writer software can be very troublesome causing all sorts of conflicks but particulally with other writer software, if the machine has say Nero's Burning and Easy CD creater this sort of thing would happen.
Duff Disk, I think he means when it ruins a disk, this can be a common thing on older types of writer that have a small amount of onboard memory, newer BURNPROOF types are much more reliable at writing every time.
If it is putting you off buying the machine get them to uninstall all the writing programs and reinstall just one, and see how it goes. Turn off screen savers, make sure power management of hardrive and monitor are turn off or put on longer settings so as not to activate during the writing period, try not to use the PC whilst writing is in progress. I think he probably meant that the CD was bad. I'd try again with a high quality CD-R and not some generic brand.
