Hi to all,

I just upgraded my OS from windows 98 to Win Xp.

I found out that the File system is fat32 and still working fine.

Later I install another hardisk and formatted it using the "format" in XP.

There is no fat32 option to choose, the only and default option is NTFS.

After the formatting, I found out that this drive is Read-only. I try afew times to format and write data to it but still couldnt work.

Can anyone help!!

Thank you.

regards
kt

What is the size of your new hard drive? If it is over about 32gb it might have to be partitioned first if you want to use FAT32.

"You cannot format a volume larger than 32 GB in size using the FAT32 file system in Win2K/XP. The Win2K/XP FastFAT driver can mount and support volumes larger than 32 GB that use the FAT32 file system (subject to the other limits), but you cannot create one using the Format tool. This behaviour is by design. Microsoft recommends using NTFS for partitions greater than 32GB.

If you need to format a FAT32 partition greater than 32GB, you will need to do it under Windows 98/SE/ME."

NTFS versus FAT32

HOW TO: Partition and Format a Hard Disk in Windows XP (Q313348)

My disk is 60GB in size. The formatted disk is now in ntfs.

My OS is sitting in a fat32 file system and the other formatted disk is in NTFS.

Will that cause any problem??

thanks

It should not cause any great problems as XP should be able to read both drives, however it is not really desirable. If you do not have data on the new drive you should be able to use fdisk to delete the existing partition and recreate a new fat32 one. Once it is created XP will recognise it ok, its just that xp cannot create fat32 drives bigger than 32GB. All things are possible except skiing through a revolving door.

I am have 2 hardisk 20GB(Fat32) and 60GB(NTFS)
Is the problem related to the security??
I have already log on as administrator.

Check this heading out in the Help and Support program and see what it says about Security (and also Convert.exe).

Choosing between NTFS, FAT, and FAT32

Try using the basic Win98 bootup disk and use FDisk. Don't use the XP formatting program. After you get to DOS from the disk bootup, just type fdisk and you'll be able to partition your HD using FAT32. After you partition your drives and reformatted them, install WinXP and install to whichever drive you want (preferably C:\). -----

There is no news like bad news!

the XP is in the 20GB hardisk(FAT32)
the 60GB (NTFS) is blank
