I have an external harddrive that I use as a backup.
I put a folder on it today and now I can't copy it back to my pc. I looked at the property tab and it shows it as read only.(shaded check)I uncheck and attempt to apply the attributes and it stay's checked.(note this isn't a normal check it is greyed or shaded). When I attempt to copy the folder it says access denied make sure the disk is not full or write protected.I am logged in as administrator also..
BTW This is xp pro ntfs service pack2.
Thanx allot

Something else is going on in the device driver definition of the drive. You most certainly do not want it to appear as the equivalent of a removable and non-writable device. As you your specific question, the Read only attribute for folders under XP are unchangeable and do not mean what you might think:
They have ended up being just a flag to Explorer as to whether a special folder configuration has been done.

I attempted to change the attribute's as the microsoft page suggested. I still can't move the folder or file's inside the drive.. It say's make sure the file isn't write protected or in use.
Any more suggestion's?
Thanx for your help..

If the folder was created by some active process, such as some backup imaging software, you will be prevented from moving the folder until you stop the scheduled task entry or the backup process that created the folder.

Something like Handle or Process Explorer from this site might assist you to locate what is using the file.

Some other old articles.

"If another user attempts to copy or move a document from the encrypted folder to another location on the hard disk, the following message appears:"
Error Copying File or Folder

Cannot copy Filename: Access is denied.

Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected
and that the file is not currently in use.

You may receive an error message when you try to rename a folder on an NTFS partition in Windows XP

Thanx Linney neither worked tho.
I searched microsoft for the hotfix they described in the article- without any luck.
Thanx bcastner I used copy and paste.if I hadn't of formatted the old machine I could retreive them, but to late.
There has to be some way. I can see the files and even execute the .exe. I just can't copy them to the pc where they belong.
