I have a problem. I just installed a new 56K modem. I am running on Windows 98. The problem is I have checked my Resources before I logged on and it indicated 71% free. Now, when I log off it indicates 63% free. What should I do when it gets really low? Does it indicate a virus? And what are the chances that the system will crash because of it?

Hit ctrl>alt>delete all at the same time but not too fast or you will reboot. and clk. end task on all but explorer and systray "you can only end task on one at a time hitting ctrl.alt.del. for each program. and then see what your resources are. some programs hate to give up when you log off..Oh yea you have to highlite each program you end task on...

yea jackha's right that happens to me its IE and when u use ur system alot like the internet and alot of programs running at the same time for a long period of time.. i usally just restart when my system gets boggy its not a virus just like jackha said its some programs that like to keep ur resources after u are done using them..when u restart u know it is all fresh and new..I love that.

Hope that helped

Are you guys sure it's not a virus??? If not than I dont really mind. But thanks.

Did u try the Crtl+alt+Del and end everything except explorer and sys tray like jackha said to do it most of the time not a virus its just programs hogging the memory if u want to be safe just run some antivirus if u have upto date stuff then it would help if u run scan disk then defrag it would help ur system performance a bit

but im pretty sure its not a virus it could be but prob not

Yea hackpalace I guess Josh and I have been there done that but if your system resources don't go back to normal afterwords better run a scan just to be sure.. jackha

It has been really fluctuating. Sometimes the resources get up to 80% and as low as 72%. And like I said I had them install a new modem (56K). Could it be if the computer has been disconnected for a long period of time would that reduce the number of resources?

As far as viruses go, I always check for e-mails and attachments that end with .EXE And plus I always delete junk e-mails. So is it still possible?

This is overkill I know , some information may not be relevant , but
for those that are reading this question & learning rather than

hackpalace,

In Windows 95/98/ME, there is a flaw that causes the % free resources to drop over time. The more processes you have running in the background will cause it to drop more quickly. You'll notice that if you do a fresh boot, leave everything closed and check your resources after just 2-3 hours, you should notice that they've already started to drop.

Windows NT kernels didn't have this type of problem which is why you could easily leave a Win2K pc running for weeks at a time.

Definitely not a virus causing it...reboot is the only "real" way to get them back. Ending tasks can sometimes help, but some apps don't give it all back.

After rebooting, you should have less than 20 processes running when you do a CTRL-ALT-DEL. Less than 15 is preferred...

yea a fresh boot is the best bet and thats y windows 98 isnt used for servers b/c of the reboot reason. Yea I am sure it isnt a virus to I found that out along time ago I did what cdogg said to do is just let the PC sit and the resources go down after about 1 1/2 hours(try it).. 1 of the bad things about 98 but im sticken wit it forever lol
