re-installing Win 2000 Pro

I have a stop error msg ( c0000218 ) from a corrupt Registry (I defraged & did NOT back up prior.) Can I re-install win 2000 Pro & save my files/folders ? I tried starting this proceedure, but got a message about losing it all ! I don't remember win 98 doing this on a re-install over the top of a previous install.

Thank god I've got this laptop to work with.

You will only loose your current windows settings unless you do a format which is a part of the windows setup. The format on the setup can be skipped.
