We have Windows NT 4.0 SP6A and Exchange 5.5. We think we have a bad hard drive. Exchange is running but to be safe we would like to get it onto a new drive. So my question is what should we back up? My guess is the directory and the Information Store. And how do we import all the information etc... after the re-install, to make it work like it was? Any help would be greatly appreciated. We also thought about just "Mirroring" the drive and then breaking the mirror. Thanks in advance.

I had to recover exchange-DBs once after a new install and I'ld really hate to have to do it again. -It is a pain! :-( -

If possible, make an image of the drive (or a full backup of the whole exchange organization) and create the new setup from the image (or the backup). That should work.

I had to recover -after- the disk failed and I can tell you.. not funny.

If you only have the IS and the directory, but not the rest of the installation you have to be absolutely sure of every field that you ever put in the exchange, because it a-b-s-o-l-u-t-e-l-y must be the excact same as with the previous installation.

If possible, this is what I would do...
* Backup the whole exchange organization. (preferably not with NT-backup, but it will do if you have to).
* Testinstall it on a different machine in a separate workgroup (it doesn't have to be a domain for testing, ut you should have a server and a client)
* test the installation.
* Once you get that running, keep it as backup solution
* Now, put in the other HD and restore on the real machine.

I hope this helped...

I'll give this a go. The Server seems to be running now so I'm trying to backup everything. I'll keep you posted Thanks for the reply:)
