Hey all,
I recently had to re-install WIN98, and now I have no sound. I looked on the WIN98 CD and I re-loaded multimedia. But I still have no sound. I go into contol panel, sounds and there is nothing there. When I go into sounds and click in events I cannot preview the sounds. The soundis totally gone from my system. How would I re-install it

Thanks,

Gary

Sounds require a sound card to operate. Look in the device manager to see what gives with the sound card.
Usual problem is that the sound card hasn't successfully loaded the drivers because of device conflicts. You can remove everything related to sound in the mangler and let it reinstall on the next bootup. Sometimes that will resolve it.

I looked all around my system, and it appears that the sound drivers didnt load. It is not recognizing the card that I have. There are no conflicts Iam confused

Do you have drivers that came with the card?
You could try adding hardware, but that may , or may not, pick up the proper stuff.

It was factory preinstalled i went to the drivers cd, and redownloaded the drivers and i still dont have it.Strangest thing I have seen.

Gets nasty from here. Worst case would be to kill HKLocalMachine Enum key and before reboot pull any expansion cards. Then let it reinstall the hardware on the M/B. After it has found everything (may require 6 or 7 reboots to find it all) then add the sound back in.
Before that , however, you might want to look at the other devices on the system for any indications of problems that might affect the sound.

Thanks for the info. I cant get to the sound card, because I would have to remove the hard drive to get to it. I am thinking of wiping the hard drive out and re-installing windows, and hopefully the card will re-install
