SFC leaves a report in the Event Viewer (System).
Event Type: Information
Event Source: Windows File Protection

is not the System File Checker, that is SFC /ScanNow from the Start Run box. This will only take a small portion of time as compared to a proper repair install.

See this article, 315341, it is the full install of Windows over a damaged Windows in the hope it repairs any problems you may have. Like a normal first install it should run for approximately 39 minutes.

How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade (Reinstallation) of Windows XP (Q315341)

Ok, thanks.
I did run SFC from the command line in task mgr, just as you said, it asked for my win xp pro install cd and i put it in and then away it went, i saw the "blue line" go all the way and then i left for a minute and came back. So i will go check event viewer.
Thanks
Will do the other stuff if needed.
Lets see what even viewer says first.

Okay, i went to event viewer. I always have stuff in there.
I see a lot of "information" files and there is always lots in there, dating back to feb 28 05. It must overwrite the previous month?
There is 2 "warnings" but they are only related to getting an IP address (DHCP).
Maybe i should run SFC again and make not of the date, but i can see from my posts, above, that it was between 11:39 and 12:33. In that time frame there are only a few information files, event 7036. This is in manage\event viewer\system, figured that was where i should look?

Use the Filter option to filter out all the "Windows File Protection" messages.

It is available from the View menu while the System folder is selected.

I went to event viewer\system\view\filter
What is there is : event types
info warning error success audit failure audit

Then event source
Category
few other items
I cant see where to get it to do that exactly as you describe, however, there are only a few informations there anyway, mostly 7036 and 7035, which could be me turning zone alarm to "lock". I have been doing that to prevent my problem from coming up.
the only other items there are event 64016 and 64017
I found precious little via google for all 4 of these events.
I will still work the filter if you can tell me just a bit more on how to do what you want done. But again there are only a couple items there anyway.

Look at the drop down arrow for Event Source ALL and select "Windows File Protection", Apply and OK.

Any other Event Errors take to -

and see what it says when you search for the Event ID and Event Source.

I havent been able to do all the things suggested, been a busy week.
However, i have had time to run SFC as linney described and voila, it appears my main issue from my other thread appears to have been fixed! Its a bit too soon to tell as i thought it was fixed before only to have it come back.
This is the issue of explorer taking over and running my cpu up to 100% as per windows task mgr.
I believe the 2 issues are one and the same.
I havent posted here as i didnt want to post, again, that all is well only to find all wasnt well. All seems to be well again, hope it stays that way. If i dont have the problem in a few more days i would guess i would be all fixed up, thanks to linney.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed as i dont want to have to re-install if i dont have to.
