I'm involved in redesigning our exting Retail POS system which is written in Clipper. I want to develop a windows based system. I want to know what the best programming language that I can use for new POS system?

Best is relative to your knowledge. .Net is the most popular be it C+, VB, C# whatever, pick your poison. All will meet your needs.

I would also like to add based on "redisigning our existing system". Do you mean where you work wrote the original software and sells it, or is it what you use at your business? If you don't plan on marketing your software beyond your company, why write it in the first place? You will spend years writing what you could purchase from an existing software vendor for far less than the cost of time it would take to write. Expecialy when you ask what to write it in.

Thanks for your valuable comments.

The existing system is what we are using at our business(retail). Currently we are involved in implemeting an ERP(JDEdwards Enterprice One) system. There are some issues in our exiting system and also management wants to check inventory at any time. Therefore we decided to redesign our POS system.

If your still deciding....
I had a similar callenge a while back and grabbed some open source and turned it into this;
uniCenta oPOS - good for retail and open source - all source available and with no recurring maintenance/charges.
Am guessing if you are going to "do-it-yourself" you could save a bunch of time, blood, sweat & tears
