I have a spreadsheet with total numbers in several rows broken down by categories by percentage. I do not know what the numbers the % represents. Is there a simple formuala that will convert all of the %'s into numbers ie
Column 1 Column 2 Column 3 Column 4
25% 50% 25% 200
15% 75% 10% 1000

Thanks

Ian,

All that a percentage is, is a RATIO. There is nothing inherent in the value that would indicate WHERE the values that represent that ratio came from.

I don't mean to be condescending, I probably don't understand what you're asking...but if I read your post correctly, you want to figure what number a percentage represents given the percentage and the total number.

If this is the case, multiply the TotalNumber by the percentage. For example, 15% of 1000 = 1000*.15, or 150.

Is that what you were looking for?!?

John

Every generalization is false, including this one.

I know its simple to work this out but I wanted a formula that would work it out for a whole spreadsheet with varying percentages and totals

If
[tt]
25% 50% 25% 200
[/tt]
is in ROW 1 columns A - D, then in column E
[tt]
=$D1/A1
[/tt]
Then Copy E1 and paste into F1:G1

Then copy E1:G1, select E1 to the last row containing data and paste.

Maybe I'm stupid, but I can't understand what it is you're after?

Column 1 Column 2 Column 3 Column 4
25% 50% 25% 200
15% 75% 10% 1000

Do you want it to look like this instead or what?

Column 1 Column 2 Column 3 Column 4
50 100 50 200
150 750 100 1000

If that is the case, then you can create a "mirror" sheet, containg the following in A1 (if that is the first value mentioned above)

=sheet1!A1*sheet1!$D1

and fill right three columns, and down. In the forth column (D), write the following on row 1

=sheet1!D1

and fill down.

if this isn't what you had in mind, then you're going to have to be more specific.

?

The formula is always the same. In your posted example, in cell E1 type =A1*D1. that you give you 25% * 200. In F1, type =B1*D1 which gives you 50% * 200. Continue on like this until all desired %'s have been converted to numbers.

Highlight the new cells you've created (in your example, it would be E1:G1).

Hover your cursor over the bottom right corner of the selection until the cursor changes to a little plus sign. Then drag that formulas down for all occupied rows.

Hope that helps.

oops I meant
[tt]
=$D1*A1
