I've set up 2 identical Windows 2003 servers. I have been able to use remote desktop connection to connect to both of them. Then I installed SQL client tools on one of them and since then I cannot RDP to that server. When I check netstat -a I see that port 3389 is no longer listening on the server that I installed the SQL client tools. I even uninstalled SQL and the port is still not listening and I cannot RDP to it.

Any ideas why the SQL install would cause this and how I can make RDP work again?

SQL Client tools? FOr Microsoft SQL Server? If so, why are you trying to connect to the MySQL port of 3389? SQL Server uses 1433.

Yes SQL Client tools for Micrsoft SQL server. I'm not trying to connect to the mysql port of 3389. I just noticed that after I installed the sql client tools, RDP is no longer functioning. This is the only change that was done to the server. I've been able to duplicate the problem on another server by installing the SQL client tools and after that install RDP is no longer working.

If anything is there a way to force 3389 to listen?

Oops - my bad - got my ports mixed up - sorry. I've been working my MySQL installs all day so must have been in automatic mode!

Check the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server\WinStations\RDP-Tcp

Find the "PortNumber" subkey and see if the value of 00000D3D, hex for (3389), is present. If it isn't or is something else then change it back.

I've never seen this before and I've installed the client tools on loads of different machines. Weird.

I checked the registry key and found that the value is still at 3389 (hex though).

I still keep getting the error 'the client could not connect to the remote computer. Remote connections may not be enabled or the computer might be too busy to accept new connections.'

I checked that Remote Desktop Connection is check marked but I don't see that the server is listening on 3389.
