When I tried to install the rdp client for XP SP2 (as I did not find it under accesories, system tools), the install did not go through saying that it was already installed. But I could not find it. I did a Start -> Run -> mstsc, but no luck.
Please advice.

Either search your hard disk for mstsc or goto x:\windows\system32 and it should be in there. Remote desktop client comes with XP by default so maybe trying to install it you have actually uninstalled it.

When I was born I was so suprised I didn't talk for 18 months

Start \ Run \ mstsc.exe

SimonD.

The real world is not about exam scores, it's about ability.

thats because it's under communications not system tools.
BTW when you find it run it as mstsc /console , works better.
%SystemRoot%\system32\mstsc.exe

I am sorry, it couldn't find it. When I try to install, it says it cannot be installed as the OS already has a built in version.
Thanks.

I tried copying the files from another working XP install,
mstsc.exe
apphelp.dll
mstscax.dll
opengl32.dll
and tried to rdp. I get this message

"cannot find the specified file. c:\windows\system32\<LANG_NAME>\mstsc.exe.MUI

I copied to the lang folder under system32, but still no luck.

Please advice.

Are you doing your installing and testing as an Administrator, not as a Limited User?

Have you enabled the showing of both Hidden and System files via Folder Options/ View? In Search you would have to set similar settings too.

Some general things to try.

See if System Restore will get you back to a restore point before your problem with Explorer.

Try Safe Mode With Networking (Do you have this problem in Safe Mode?).

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right-click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking. Select both boxes.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

HOW TO: Verify Unsigned Device Drivers in Windows XP

If they don't work you could try repairing windows by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.

I had a similar problem as the post on 4-12-08. Installing SP3 fixed the entire problem. I believe there was a mismatch in files and SP3 overwrote all the incompatabilities between them.
