RDNS for entire domain?

I had to have my ISP add PTR records for the email server since some of the email was not accepted without a PTR.
Now I am experiencing problems browsing to some web pages for the same reason. I confirmed this as browsing from the email server works fine but from other computers fail. The current RDNS entries with our ISP only list the email server not the full 255 IPs that I have. What is the best way to obtain RDNS for the entire domain? Since I host the nameserver localy and I am listed in the parent server is this something that I missed on my DNS server? (NT4)

Thanks for any suggestions,

You could ask your ISP for for rDNS control over the range most ISP are willing to give it to you.

Having no rDNS shouldnt affect browsing the web. You might want to check your DNS server for configuration problems.

I've never known a lack of PTR cause browsing problems. Can you provide us with URL's that require reverse DNS?

I suspect that your problem lies elsewhere.

Chris.

In reply to iproute: I had never heard of such a thing either but when I was informed this was a requirement I tried reaching from my email server which does have a PTR for the domain and it worked fine. Unless it's a fluke and I'm just gullible...who knows...first I heard of this. I have corrected the PTR issue so I should know by tomorrow if it works for the rest of IPs and I'll post the results. If this is for real it could cause a lot of problems you would never think of looking this direction to fix.

FaiTHLeSS....I checked a little further and it was a change on the ISPs name server that caused my other issues for PTR as they disabled forwarding to my DNS server.

That's what I love about this job....just when you think you have it all together...it blows up!

Thanks

That url doesnt work for me with https but with http i get 403 error access denied

It tries to work for me but wants to load a certificate on my machine that can't be verified because it can't locate a valid revocation server, so when I don't install the certificate, I also get page not found. Don't know if security has anything to do with it, just wanted to give you a heads up. Thanks.

Update….the PTRs are now working for my domain and yes this now works!
I have no idea just when this came into affecting web pages and maybe it really isn’t but all I know is the PTR fixed it. FYI: I made no changes to anything so I know it isn’t working because of something I tried.

Originally it worked just like it did for FaiTHLeSS but when I just checked it did ask to load a certificate and it did load with no problems. Now at least the users here at work can get to this web page to do what they need to.

Parting comment: I’m always happy when something is resolved but it sure bugs the crap out of me when I don’t know why! Oh well it’s good for the moment….’till the next weird issue pops up.

If I find out any info about this I’ll pass it on.

Thanks,

My word! You're right. I tried in without rDNS and I got page cannot be displayed. Ran the connection through a proxy with reverse DNS and sure enough the page came up.

Givin the nature of the site I can see why maybe they want to know who's on there.

I've learnt something new today. Now I've just got to figure out how to get Apache to check rDNS.

Chris.
