Any advice welcome please!
Have just taken over responsibility for a W2k3 server with SP1 installed its a DC. It hadn't been patched for a while and needed some clearing up (nothing major just tidying file shares etc). Ran all the Windows Updates in and rebooted the box (this would have been the first reboot its had for some time so windows updates probably aren't responsbile).
From then until now DNS errors on startup saying:
The DNS server could not intialize the remote proedure call (RPC) service. If it is not running start the RPC service or reboot the computer.
DNS then starts (as a service) but cant be connected to because the RPC service is unavailable.
Needless to say a reboot hasn't cleared this problem.
Looking in the logs I found that NTDS was trying to connect to an old DC that had died without being demoted first but I have found all entries for that and removed it and now there are no NTDS errors at all.
Every 5 minutes in the application log I get the following error:
Windows cannot determine the user or computer name. (there are no more endpoints available from the endpoint mapper)
If i try to join any machine that is using this as its dc to the domain I get the endpoint error aswell.
I cant demote the box either because I get the endpoint error.
I have run a dcdiag and get the following error
Win32 Error 1753
This may limit some of the tests that can be performed.
A netdiag passes on everything including DNS (its looking at two other working DNS servers)
I have followed the microsoft guide on RPC troubleshooting but its not got me anywhere-
the rpc service is started
the reg keys are set as required
nothing should be blocking the rpc ports
I'm pretty much out of ideas! I either need ot be able to demote the box (it needs a rebuild anyway really but don't want to do this without demoting) or resolve the rpc/dns errors
Help!
