random restart problem

I just finished making a computer and I installed windows XP without any problem. First thing I did was setup a firewall and anti-virus before accessing the internet. Now everything was fine the first time I went on. I shut my computer down and the next time I went to boot up it boot up ok. I clicked on IE 6 and then my computer just restarted for no reason. It has done that 3 times so far when I choose an application to access the internet and once as soon as the welcome screen was starting to disappear, a random restart. I downloaded memtest and tested my RAM and that is ok. The PSU is fine as far as I know, the motherboard is not grounding out, no metal is touch the chasis where it shouldn't be. Someone told me that it could possibly be a bad driver, I downloaded all the critical updates for windows, the drivers for my video card, and a few drivers for the MB (it is about 2 years old and I didn't have the CD).

Now it just did the restart again and when it rebooted it an error message came up and said that windows had found a fatal error (no BSOD) that said it had to do with internet protocol (IP) and it asked me if I wanted to send the report to microsoft, you know the usual screen that comes up that says 'send' or 'don't send'. I click on a button that said more technical info and it said the two files that were "possibly" causing a problem was one in the temporary folder which I have since emptied and another one in the C:\WINDOWS\Minidump folder (a dmp file). I don't know what minidump is, but I deleted the file anyways. Anyone have an ideas what could cause this error and my computer to randomly restart (it couldn't be a virus becuause it started directly after a clean install of windows, and I have ran anti-virus, spybot, adaware, as well as another program to check for malware).

Check the event viewer for clues - Start, Run, eventvwr.msc

In my experience, when restarts are completely random and there are no errors in event viewer, the most likely cause is the power supply.

Anything in particular I should be looking for. there are lots of entries under the system and application headings.
All the listings under application are just Warnings and information lists. Under the system heading, there are information and warnings as well, as well as explicit "errors", most of them are from the source of "Browser", but there is one system error which might be the error I was talking about in my original post. It gives me the error code:

Error code 1000008e, parameter1 c0000005, parameter2 bf9e2ee0, parameter3 f94efa0c, parameter4 00000000.

which means absolutely nothing to me at this point.

are you able to download windows critical updates? the sasser virus, while trying to infect your machine from the network can cause random restarts. the only way to block it is to install the correct windows update.

To get further information about any error look in your Event viewer.

Look in the System or Application folder. You can get to the Event Viewer via right click My Computer icon and select Manage.

Any errors logged in the Event Viewer can be expanded by double clicking on the error line.

Take any event error I.D. number and search for it on these sites.

Also check any "Information" line that mentions "savedump" and you should find reference to "recovered from a bug check". This is the Stop Error that caused your problem.

You can also turn off "automatically restart after an error" so it will just halt at the fault and display the full Stop Error and blue screen.

Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties .
On the Advanced tab, click Settings under Startup and Recovery .
Click to clear the Automatically restart check box under System failure , and then click OK . The error message on a blue screen should remain on the screen so you can record the error information.

Start, Administrative Tools, Services.

Anything that has the word "Nvidia" or "NVIDIA" I want you to stop, set the startup type to disabled, and then reboot and test again.

Thanks for the help guys. I went it and turned off the automatic restart so if anything else happens hopefully I will see the BSOD to get a better idea of what is happening. It just happened to me again and I went to the event view and this is what it said (happened at 8:36 am so I know this is the entry):

The browser service has failed to retrieve the backup list too many times on transport \Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{93AB2C9A-FA3F-4698-823D-65DFD0056799}. The backup browser is stopping.

It happened as soon as I clicked on IE 6 to get on the internet. After that, it just restarted. I did go to services.mcs and turned off the Nvidia program that was set to start up automatically with windows, so we will see what that will do. I will reboot and hope for the best.
