Not quite a helpful tip, but not really a question either.....

Recently, I've suffered my win98se system going through seemingly random reboots, and the only change I'd made to my system immediately before that was to do an overlay of Acrobat Reader 5.0, in order to replace some plugins I'd deleted, so that I could view a specific file.

The reboots manifested themselves after this, resulting in the usual Scandisk activity, although something of possible importance was the appearance of the 'updating DMI pool data' message during the early stages of the boot, something only normally seen after changes to MSCONFIG or other such changes.

I searched around these forums for any help, and the overwhelming opinion was that this was usually caused by a hardware failure, specifically the motherboard.

Clutching at straws, I first reinstated a registry backup from before the problem started, but this had no effect.
I then decided to replace an image, as I maintain a partition image of my install, and since doing this, I've had no more problems.

My worry here is that some kind of malware was on my system which was reconfiguring a low level setting for some reason, and then forcing a reboot, although neither my antivirus or Spybot S&D had found anything dodgy.

So I've put these observations up here in order to add to the searchable database of problems and observations, and in the hope that it might help someone discover the nature of this and other peoples' similar problems.

Regards, Andy.

Make sure your AV program is fully updated when doing a virus search.

Also, run Ad-aware, CWShredder, and Hijack This to detect and remove any malware.
