HP 8540W notebook with Windows 7 64bit gives short beeping sound randomly. HP already replaced most of the hardware parts and is now suggesting that this is a Windows problem. Can anyone point me in the right direction as I thought it would be hardware related.

Get a bootable CD (some version of linux, Ultimate Boot CD, BartPE, whatever) and boot up to it. If the CD loads and operates, let it sit there and see if it beeps under a non-windows operating system.

If it beeps, complain to HP. If not, start searching in Windows 7

What was the reason for all the hardware replacement??

Probably the easiest to create plus it has memory and HDD tests on it for future use.

Most BIOS chips are programmed to play random noises when they are failing. Has anyone checked this?

^ No Genomon, That is not right.....Most bios chips are programmed to provide a "beep code" to help point out a failure during the POST( Power on Self Test). It does not make random noises, if it is, then it has failed. Is anything plugged into the laptop? mouse? cam? External drive? unplug them All. Is Bluetooth turned on? (turn it off as a test) Does the laptop have IR? and is it enabled? if so turn it off.

1. BIOS beep codes are NOT random. They usually happen right at POST and often the PC won't boot if the problem is serious enough.
2. Do what rclarke250 said and then follow my instructions. Ruling OUT windows by not booting to it will prove it to be hardware-related.

Another mystery source of such sounds can be nearby Mobile
devices (Windows Mobile, Pocket PC, Windows CE, Palm Pilot,
etc.). When I would lay a device down on the desk my laptop
would play a sound. Pick the device up and the laptop played a
different sound. What the...? This stopped once I turned the IR
port on the device off. ---Charles Kincaid"

Still *More* Ghostbusting

Reminds me of an older guy that said one his two twin HP Vista laptops would start barking after a while. A dog barking. I could NOT figure out where it was coming from. Nothing in the Control Panel >> Windows SOUNDS. I didn't think it was AOL. I never heard the barking either.

More likely to be bluetooth instead of IR nowadays. Most laptops nowadays don't have IR. It could be the laptop picking up bluetooth devices. Open up the bluetooth icon in the tray and see what is trying to connect.

Hardware components were replaced because HP thought is was hardware related. The laptop will make this beeping noice at any location.
I have not seen any other device that close by that could cause a problem.
No errors during BIOS POST, only in Windows. Laptop connects to a docking station, but also beeps without been connected to the docking station. HP did not replace the hard drive as I did not want to re-install Windows 7 at the time, but it seems I have no alternative now.

There's no need for hard drive replacement - it's most likely a windows "problem". If you had an old hard drive that you could put in and load Windows 7 on with just the bare minimum of software and all drivers installed and see if it beeped, that would be an interesting test. But I wouldn't A)nuke your current hard drive and reinstall or B)get a new drive from HP.

I would be shocked that HP would give you a hard drive given the symptoms and what they've done. They've lost a lot of money throwing hardware at the problem.

Did you follow the other suggestions for finding ghosts in windows settings as linney suggested.

I had this happen on a client when a switch port was going bad. You say that it happens whether the laptop is connected to the docking station or not. When not connected to the docking station do you still have it connected to the same wall port (assuming a wired connection here)?

Also, check your event logs. If you check the warning or errors that appear in the Summary of Administrative Events you may find something and it's a lot easier than wading through every event log. Allow a couple of minutes after the "beep" to write any event to the logs.

Hope this helps.

What does the beep sound like? Does it sound like the Windows volume tester, when you push the volume up or down, or does it sound like the built-in speaker on the motherboard? Or does it sound like morse code?

If the latter, then maybe your laptop is really some sort of transformer, and is trying to "phone home". So if you think things are suddenly shaking like an earthquake, perhaps you should toss the laptop out the window before daddy comes to get it.
