I upgraded to 4 GB of RAM Memory to my Compaq Presario SR1901WM PC.The System Information in Control Panel sees the new 4 GB, but I have not noticed any improvement in performance, is there something else I need to to in order to increase speed/performance?

Thank You

How much memory did you have to begin with? What were the factors that made you decide to upgrade the RAM? Have you done your housekeeping and done disk cleanups and defrags? If these haven't been done recently (or at all) then you might see a noticable difference if you do these too.

Would be handy to know what you started out with though... ie have you doubled your RAM or just added a 1Gb?

I only had one GB of RAM, I was told that is the reasons Videos would stop playing on my website, I did all the clean up work, including antivirus etc. I have the fastest Sprint DSL Speed available, but no noticablr difference in loading pages speed, and the videos kep stopping and they say buffering.

The amount of memory usually has little or no impact on streaming video. You should question your source as to why you were told that. The only exception is if you had an extremely small amount of RAM, say 128MB or 256MB, in Windows XP which could easily see a boost in overall performance (not just video) by upgrading to a 1GB or more. That clearly has nothing to do with the situation you're in since you started with a gig.

Your issue is likely to be the Sprint connection or a problem in Windows. To be sure which one, see if you have the same problem from multiple websites on multiple high-speed connections (try your office, a public Wi-Fi hotspot, etc). Have another working laptop use your Sprint DSL connection to see if it has issues.

You can test your bandwidth speed to see if it's within acceptable limits:

one site is:

I have Verizon DSl and use this link, it seems to work for Comcast as well

or you can do a Google search on "bandwidth speed test" to find other sites; try a few and see if they give similar results.

That there is your key?

If it says Buffering it means it attempting to acquire enough of the video from source to play it. This has nothing to do with the amount of ram you have. It comes down to your internet connection.

Either the video is very large and hence takes a moment to download. Or Your internet connection speed is not as good as you think.

I second both cdogg's and Mcallisto's advice.

Sorry I have not been able to respond to any of the wonderful suggestions. I was hit by a teenager drunk driver without a license and high on alcohol & drugs. I just today am able to get around the computer without too much pain.

One thing I hoped I would have been able to include in my original question concerned Tracking Cookies. When I run the AVG anti-virus program it finds 2000 or more tracking cookies, but I have been afraid to do anything out of fear it will delete the cookies I want to keep, and it will also wipe out my browsing history on my Browser IE 7.0. Is it too late to add that to my original question? Again, sorry I could not respond.

I wish you a speedy recovery, I was hit by a bus once so I know what it feels like.
Just about every site you visit has a cookie, they are all over the internet. Some people don't worry about them, others are paranoid about cookies. Most cookies are harmless.
Run R&D Spybot or MS Windows Defender and see what it reports.

Thank you ettienne.

All they found were tracking cookies, so I think I will just leave them be. And contact Sprint DSL Tech Support, and if they can't help, I may just switch to Cox Cable.

Thank you all for your suggestions.

In the configuration of AVG, you can set it to ignore Cookies under Advanced/ Scans.

Get well soon.

Though I don't have much else to add, I just wanted to wish you a speedy recovery as well.

Thank you all for the well wishes regarding my recovery. Physically I feel fine, but my computer is "sick".

It still takes forever to load at startup, may I ask is there any type of checklist I could use to disable any items in the msconfig to help it load faster, I also was just looking at the regedit, there are a lot of programs listed that are no longer on this computer, can they be deleted safely, or is their a scan I could use to identify what can safely be deleted?

Thanks again for all the well wishes.

It is preferable to use Add or Remove to uninstall programs rather than delving into the Registry. Using things like Registry Cleaners can often be the precursor to a clean install and format, mind you that may not be a bad thing as long as you have saved your valuable data.

The basic test is how fast does your computer load and run in Safe Mode, or surf from "Safe Mode with Networking"? If the performance is bad in Safe Mode then you should look at the state of your hard drive, it might need defragging or error checking, otherwise it is time to consider the hardware side of things. You should also check performance from Normal Mode but be logged on as a different user.

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right-click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking. Select both boxes.

Glad you have solved the problem.

Can you share the solution with the forum, it may help some fellow reader who is having the same, or a similar, problem?

Thank you in advance.

I contacted Microsoft before I posted here, I finally got a reply, they said to change my Virtual Memory/Paging file size, it was not changed since I added the additional RAM, making them larger, increased my performance, and solved the "Buffering" issue, and videos play fine now. Thanks for all the help.

Cheers

Thanks for the Feedback, did that fix your System Restore problem also (you can answer that in your other thread)?
