Does any one know how to identify the RAM size on RAM memory. I am striping a few old PC to make up a couple of good basic ones for the kids to use in their bedrooms. I also have a old AST Advantage 621E that if I try to run any OP windows system other than AST modified version I ony get a choice of 2 or 16 colurs on the pallet and I am also restricited to 640x480 screen area. This nasty system also only allows me to use the 4xcd ROM drive already installed and won't recogonise a 36x drive I have. Any ideas guy and girls

hi martingg, have you tried getting the video/display drivers for that old PC? from what you described, it would really help if you get the right drivers for the version of windows you are going to install on your PC.

It cant accept your newer 32x CD-ROM drive? old PCs, with older motherboard models, may only be able to accept slower albeit older CD-ROM drives. Have you tried an 8x or 16x CD-ROM drive yet?

Sorry cant help you on the RAM. I only know relatively about the old 72 pin EDO RAMs being used in 2s and such, the newer RAM sticks are much easier to handle. But it may help if you look at the POST boot up of the PC before you salvage the RAM. Provided the old PC can boot up of course.

If anyone else can give a better/deeper insight on this, it would help! (it'll help me in the process too anyway ;-) )

cheers guys You confirmed my worst fears that i have a pile of crap (or two). I have had a look at the microsoft help and it mentions somthing that certain AST vidio adaptors are not supported by windows 98 and that I need to contact AST, but I can't find a web address for them on the internet. Any leads or are they defunked.

I have got one old dog up and running an IBM Aptiva running a pentium 75 with 72mb ram. However the drive is a bit small being only 1.2gb. I do have a spare drive (2.5gb) that was used as a slave that I would like to use instead (can't slave it as to the IBM as doen't have enough power outputs). However as I have only upgraded OP system how do I go about loading windows into a freshly formated drive (I can do the format bit) I have an old Windows 95 disk along with a window 98 update disk
