I have a Micro ATX VA Motherboard - MS - 6340

Bit confussed over the RAM and upgrading. It is currently at 128Mb, I would like to upgrade to the highest possible 256/512?.

Chipset supports PC100/133 SDRAM & VCM technology

Main memory supports:-

four memory banks using two 168-pin unbuffered DIMM
Supports a max memory size of 1GB (32M times 8)
Support 3.3v SDRAM DIMM

What RAM would be best to suit my system.
If I was upgrading to 256 - would I need to buy another 128 - put in slot two? Or would I just buy a 256 and replace the old RAM?
The same applies for a 512?

I have read that my motherboard will only support up to 512Mb RAM?

Could someone point me towards the correct solution/Ram Type to buy . Thanks :)

The link for the Manual is :-

The slot 2 is there for a reason! Add another 128MB of RAM in slot 2 and you then get a total of 256! It’s that simple! No need to take out the old ram and buy a single 256MB chip, but you can do that if you want to.

How many total slots does your motherboard have? Usually motherboards have up to ram 4 slots. If you only have 2 slots and want to have the highest amount of RAM, then you need to buy 2 X 256MB RAM chips (Total of 512MB), and you have to take out the old ram and throw it away, or sell it. :)

If you don't want to take out the old 128MB RAM, you can put a 256 in slot 2 and therefore you get a total of 384MB RAM.

Hope this helps

Everybody should use AntiVirus! Are you protected now?

To be very clear, your board will support 4 sticks of 256Mb RAM (PC100 or PC133). You need to decide how much you want; I have read that Windows 95/98/ME will run approx. 196Mb most efficiently (by this I mean that you get good performance gains to there, less after), unless you are running processor intensive apps like Auto-CAD (you'll continue to get good gains to 512+); I personally run 256 for consumer stuff. So, you should be able to buy a stick of whatever you want (up to 256) and just stick it in. WARNING: Some people suggest that you do not mix 'n' match RAM for compatibility reasons. This IS true - I have had incompatible sticks (if you stick it in and your computer doesn't work, go back in and pull it out - it's incompatible). But that is infrequent. It's up to you.

I've read many posts and will repeat that having over 320 MB is not recommended. You will be just fine with 256 MB. Memory is so cheap that everyone wants to overload their system nowadays. People have to keep in mind that unless you're running an NT OS or the new WinXP, you need to keep it small. Anything over 320 MB will degrade system performance and increase your risk of lockups and other memory problems...
