When I think I am a step ahead of the game, I find myself a couple steps back again. What does Veritas really buy us besides a nice GUI interface? I have removed and recreated volumes and file systems from within Veritas but when I try to remove a LUN from RM6, I get "it's in use" and cannot delete a LUN. I know I don't have any formal Veritas training but I have figured it out. What sequence is needed to remove LUNs and recreate them solely within Raid Manager without getting Veritas involved?? Is it possible? I believe it is somewhat. I would like to eliminate vxfs for some volumes and recreate them in Raid Manager.

Well, RM6 is only used with the A3500 and A3500FC arrays (basically a bunch of D1000 bricks attached to a controller) from Sun. Volume Manager, on the other hand can be used with any group of disks (internal, jbods, harware raid bricks, etc). So in your case, you really don't gain much from VM. But to most other ppl, VM is a valuable tool.

To answer your other question, if VM is running on your system, there's no way you're gonna be able to remove the luns from RM without doing some VM stuff. Others here more savvy with VM can walk you through it, but I believe you simply have to umount the filesystems that reside on those luns, export the diskgrps from Veritas, then delete them from RM. But if ur running all this stuff on top of VXFS, then you'd better get your backups ready cuz I think you'll need to blow everything away and just start from scratch and create your luns with RM6 and then restore.

Thanks for this info. It will help. Currently we have 4 25g partitions on a full A1000. 3 disks per raid5. All 9gb disks. All with Veritas VolMgr. I have the ok to wipe out everthing on this server so I am not concerned with backups. We are ok there. I am experimenting with Veritas now. I removed Vols and File systems. Recreating them. Removing them again. Now I am trying to do what you suggest. Remove the disk(s) from Veritas control. I now get this message. "vxevac: Cannot evacuate disk; netdisk03 does not contain subdisks or contains subdisks which are not associated with a volume" Which is true. There are no subdisks within this disk. So I am trying to wipe it out with "format" don't know what I am getting myself into but it looks like I will learn by fire.... again.... Any more suggestions, please send them my way! Thanks!
