I had setup a Dell 600SC File server about 6 months ago for a small business (5 workstations).
We were backing up some files to an old Travan 5GB Tape drive, and more recently setup online backup with Connected for the more critical business/accounting files.
Not crazy about the Connected backup software, but its affordable and works well for the most part.
The server came with one 40GB IDE drive, and i installed one 10GB 10K IBM SCSI drive.
OS, applications, and digital photo storage were on the 40GB drive, and the data files for quicken, ACT, etc. on the SCSI drive.
The SCSI drive crashed, and we were able to retrieve and restore most of what was needed, with the exception of certain files that should have been included in the backup but werent. Insert pulled hair here.
I suggested the possibility of going to a RAID setup to provide redundency.
This is only a simple file server, and i was thinking that just picking up a couple of 80 or 120GB SATA HD's and a RAID controller card and just going RAID 1.
I was thinking of using Norton Ghost to back up the boot IDE drive to the RAID drives on a regular basis.
Any suggestions for a decent PCI RAID controller card? Im pretty sure it only accepts the 3.3V Expansion cards.
Also i havent used Ghost yet, is it possible to automate the backing up of the OS to the RAID array?
And would i need Ghost Corporate to use on W2K Server or could i just use Ghost 2003?
I was looking at 2 Maxtor 120GB SATA HD's and the Promise FastTrak S150 TX2+ Serial ATA Raid Controller Card.
Any thoughts on this setup or recommendations for alternative components?

I think you will find that Ghost doesn't work with RAID drives. It does a sector-by-sector copy and that's a problem on an array. At least, that's what I understand from the information on Symantec's web site.

Thanks for the reply. I should have been more specific about where i would install Ghost, and to where i would store the image.
I would install Ghost to the current IDE 40GB drive, and then store the image on the RAID array.
