I have a 2000 DC box on the network before my time w/ the co. It has 3 HD's and configured for Raid 1 and 5 according to the Dell Array Manager. How is this possible? I know you can have a nested array for 1 and 5 but would require 5 disks: 2 HDs for Raid 1 and 3 HD's for Raid5.

Thanks

You're sure there are only 3 physical disks?
Using 1 and 5 together would require at least 6 disks total.
Either 2 3-disk stripes mirroring each other, or 3 2-disk mirrors all in a one stripe.
If there's really only the 3, I'd just say the software is wrong and not worry much about it.

Quote jason...

for RAID 5+1 you need 6 disks

with 5 disks you can have 2 different arrays working separate... 2 in RAID 1 and 3 in RAID 5.

No way with 3 disks... ask Dell support for check what the hell their software are saying

Yep, definitely have 3 disks. And Array manager showing Raid 1 for Virtual Disk 0 containing Array Disk 0 and 1 and Raid 5 for Virtual Disk 1 containing Array Disk 0,1,2.

I'd like to see how that's done. It would still list it that way if they were on different channels of the controller (or different controllers).

You'd only need 5 drives. 2 for RAID 1, and 3 for RAID 5. I've seen some servers come with several drives mounted internally, and others in the normal drive cage. Can't recall seeing that on any recent Dell boxes, though.
