Helo all

I have just installed a Radeon 9800 Pro graphics card into my system... which is an XP3000+, 512 DDR 3200 Ram, Asus A7n8X Deluxe motherboard...

When I try to play Tron 2.0 and C&C Generals, the games both play for a few minutes perfectly, and then they just fall over!

I have just downloaded the latest drivers for the card, which I hope should work. But has anyone got any other ideas at all?

Cheers
Jusenkyo

See how it goes with the latest drivers.

To get further information about the error look in your Event viewer.

Look in the System or Application folder. You can get to the Event Viewer via right click My Computer icon and select Manage.

Any errors logged in the Event Viewer can be expanded by double clicking on the error line.

Take any event error I.D. number and search for it on this site.

Also check any "Information" line that mentions "savedump" and you should find reference to "recovered from a bug check". This is the Stop Error that caused your problem.

You can also turn off "automatically restart after an error" so it will just halt at the fault and display the full Stop Error and blue screen.

Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties .
On the Advanced tab, click Settings under Startup and Recovery .
Click to clear the Automatically restart check box under System failure , and then click OK . The error message on a blue screen should remain on the screen so you can record the error information.

Some general things to try.

See if System Restore will get you back to a restore point before your problem with your games.

Try Safe Mode (Do you have this problem in Safe Mode?).

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

If they don't work you could try repairing windows itself by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.

Ok, Ill check all the above links later.

But I installed the drivers from the ATI site, which didnt work again.

Keep the ideas coming, and I will check the above links.

I have checked DXdiag - and there are no problems. I have allso run 3DMark01 - and all tests completed succesfully!

The PC is brand new, put together by myself, and XP has only been on for a week or so - so there are no restore points.
i only installed the graphics card yesterday - and it works perfectly, and pasts all tests with no conflicts...
BUT - games just cut out after a random period of time!!!

The other thing that I noticed, is that if I pause C&C generals, the game does not cut out at all! It only cuts out when I unpause it and start to play again!

The thing is, i have no other software or conflicting drivers on the PC... Like I said, its all virgin and brand new!

I am out of ideas here!

u need 2 install sp1 and reinstall Radeon 9800 Pro graphics drivers and it sud work i had this problem

I have installed service pack 1... and installed the drivers over and over again!

Still no change!

Strange that you say you have no Restore Points after running XP for over a week. I would of thought you should have had several by now.

Have you got the latest patches for your games?

Check with the games maker too.

Have you got the latest drivers and updates for your Motherboard and bios?

I haven't updated my BIOS or motherboard at all... because I thought you couldn't do this after windows was installed!

Is that the case?

Allso - another strange thing. Last night I installed Max Payne 2 - and played it for at least 3 hours without it crashing once!

So maybe it is the games I have - C&C Generals and Tron 2.0?

I have downloaded the latest update for generals - so I will try that tonight and get back to you...

"Is that the case?"

A bios update (flash) does not rely on Windows being loaded and can be done with or without Windows on the machine. However you would require some method of downloading the files in the first place, after which you usually have to load them on to a floppy and boot from that to update the bios.

Any other drivers would require an operating system to be functioning.

In either case, it pays to read any installation instructions before proceeding.

Ok, So I am going to try and flash the BIOS with a new version... see if that works.

Any other ideas?

Not being a "gamer", I can't think of much else other than you try your luck at some forums that specialise in games and problems.

Like you say it might just be one or two games that cause problems. I suppose you could try those in different compatibility modes to see if you can get them to run.

Did your System Restore ever start creating restore points for you?

Yeah, I have some system restore points...

The problem is occuring with Max Payne 2 aswell now, so I doubt its a game thing.
My mate has a Geforce 4, and he can run al these games smooth as hell, no crashes!

Here's some things to try if you already haven't.

To check your RAM.

To check your hard drive

Your drive manufacturer will have free diagnostic software (downloadable from their site) for checking your drive for any problems.

I have no internet connection on the PC, and its brand new (Built by Me) - so I know what software is on there!

But I will try the HDD checker from Maxtor... already checked the Ram.
