Free Tip: The F1 Key does NOT destroy your PC!
A different opinion on AVG:
Some time ago, on my system, PC-Cillin found a virus that AVG had totally missed.
F-Prot (Command anti-virus) also missed the same virus.
All virus signatures were up to date.
I no longer use AVG or F-Prot.
I didn't note the name of the virus.
So, the ideal is to have a few virus scanners.
Sorry I can't be more encouraging - I've just had to give the same advice to a friend of mine.
since you didnt get the name it could have been a malicious script which each av can be set differently. to each his own. the same could be said for spyware, popup stoppers, cookie handlers,hd cleaners, etc. [if it sounds good you will feel it.]
Perhaps I may mediate on this one before a world-wide slanging match ensues between Pearl and Dermot.
Let's imagine that ALL AV software writers have one thing in common - they need to know about NEW virii before defeating them. Then really the question of how fast the new AV signatures are written and put out on the web comes into play. Now add another variable - when do the people with the software update theirs AND scan their PC's correctly AND set up the software to detect new virii.
OK, so I'm exaggerating here a little, but I've been around longer than I care to remember and seen some real horror stories AND heard some unbelievable answers when I've enquired about set-ups and updates.
I used to think that it was right to download anything but scan before opening - I have changed my opinion on that. I still believe that it is best to scan heuristically even though you might experience a false alert as a consequence.
Well, I have in the past used Norton (too complicated), McAfee (too difficult to update), InnoculateIT (impressive in many respects but very slow when used in active mode), and finally AVG which I really do like.
But like anything else in life, it's horses for courses (never really understood that analogy as it's only the 2nd or 3rd course in many countries).
And as a foot note: if you think I have made some mistakes in this text, please remember that would be unpossible.
To each his own, we can only report about what we learn from years of experience and numerous customers with problems, or not.
That is what my choice was based on, and I see, so is yours .
If another product works fine for someone, then that is fine by me.
ALL:
In the name of "better safe then sorry", if in doubt I use 3 different (updated) anti-virus apps.
And remember, NOT ONE anti-virus app. is 100% !
Like Phil said, they need time to come up with the 'anti-dote'.
Hey guys,
Just looking for an easy life.
First day here.
Just in passing - do the stars mean nothing?
People seem to be dishing them out for the most mundane stuff. "Helpful/expert" seems to be seen as covering a veritable multitude of sins.
I conscientiously gave a couple to some guy (Wolluf) today for what I considered some very knowledgeable advice given to somebody else but from which I added to my vast, ahem, reportoire of knowledge. Was I wasting my time - Is it all a nonsense? Some time later some body else gave him a star in the same thread coz he congratulated somebody for doing so well with his computer at the age of 72. The praise was nice but worthy of stardom? I fear not.
And I see up above where somebody has given Phil two stars. No offence Phil but jeez.
By the way, Phil, the phrase "world-wide slanging match" when linked with the word "Dermot" would surely be an oxymoron.
And please don't give me a star for this!
Hey, can I give myself a star?
Dermot, a star is awarded for a helpful post. How that is helpful to someone is up to that person.
Even a little general information is helpful, even if it does not solve the problem per se.
Wolluf and Phil are members who know what they are doing.
Since you are new here, read some more and enjoy, please don't judge the stars by answers alone, if you get a star, it appears in front of your handel, so Phil only has 1 here, not 2. Same for wolluf's post you refer too probably.
If Phil replies 8 more times in here, you could count 10 stars, but it is the same star. Multiple stars appear in front of the handle, check the forums and you'll see.
Click a handle and you can see the total number of received stars and go look for the threads were we earned them.
I have to agree with the supporters of AVG. I have been using it for over 3 years and have never had a problem. Those with concerns might like to consider buying antivirus software, after all,it is a free world and we are all given choices!
