We have a lot of people here using lonworks visio, and are experiencing some wierdness with it/excel. When we open up excel, we see the following message:

"Insert Viso button.xls is locked for editing by ..."

Any idea what's going on here or what we need to do about it?

If you click on WINDOWS and then UNHIDE, do you see a sheet called Insert Visio Button.xls??

Are you running Excel from a network installation?

Are others using Excel at the same time?

Have a look at the Task Manager on the machine to see if there are other instances of Excel running that you are unaware of.

I did an unhide and there is an "Insert Visio Button.xls" there. Any way I can set this not to launch with excel?

Excel was installed by CD then replicated to all the computers via norton ghost. So, they're all basically running the same copy.

Other people on the network are using excel.

I believe we were able to reproduce the error by launching multiple copies of excel, in which case it would say it was in use by the current user. Usually, though, it reports that its locked for editing by someone else.

Thanks,

Do you need the Insert Visio file??

If not, then remove the link from the XLStart directory in Program Files which points to the Insert Visio Button.XLS file which in fact sits in the Templates directory.

That should resolve it.

I also get the message: "Insert Visio Button.XLS is being modified by" every time I start more than one instance of Excel97. I'm running WinMe.

I also get the annoying: "Visio32 has caused an error in VISLIB32.DLL" and will now shut down. Doh! What the heck is this? No way I'm out of memory - I got 256Mb.

I found that removing the link from XLStart - as Hasit suggested - solved our problem.
