"There is no disk in the drive" message keeps poping up

Hello,

I have Windows XP Pro.
Every now and than 10-15 minutes my computer prompts this message to me with title "svchost.exe":

"There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into drive F:"
Where Drive F is my DVD burner (in case it matters).
With an option of: "Cancel", "Try Again" and "Continue".
When I press "Cancel" or "Continue" it disapears but pops back again after 10-15 minutes.

Why is it and what can I do in order to stop this?

What happens if you place a disk in the DVD burner, as a temporary quick fix, perhaps the message will go away and never return?

When was the last time you used the DVD, did you perhaps shutdown the machine with a disk still inside that you have since removed?

Have a look in MsConfig and see what is loading at Startup.

Hey Linney:

It happenes even if I put a disk inside.
I am using this DVD every day on a rgular basis.
I don't have anything special loading on startup except my Zone alarm client and ctfmon.
Please note that this doesn't happen only on startup, it happenes all the time and every 10-15 minutes.
This problem started to happen few days ago and I suspect it could be a malicious process that is posing as svchost, yet all my scan softwares didn't recognize anything. Any other idea?

Try Housecall from Trend Micro. It's a free online virus scanner. It appears though you are correct in regard to the virus or spyware.

Have you run spyware and adware scans?

if not, get Spybot-Search and Destroy from Safer Networking

Lavasoft - Adaware

Does it happen from Safe Mode too, or in Normal Mode as another user?

Have you considered System Restore to go back before the problem if it only began recently?

Hello Linney,

Here is an update: When you asked me: "What happens if you place a disk in the DVD burner, as a temporary quick fix, perhaps the message will go away and never return?" I said it doesn't help but accidentally I got confused and put the disck in my other drive. When I put the disk in drive the message does go away and never comes back, but I don't want to leave it like this as you can imagine... :)
Regarding System restore: I haven't tried it yet, I am considering it only as last resource. Have we arrived there? :)

I take it you have stopped seeing the message but are still worrying about whether it was caused by something nasty?

What you may have been seeing may be nothing more than a minor hiccup with XP having some odd entry somewhere in the registry waiting for you to insert a DVD. Having done the deed, hopefully that is the end of the matter. It might pay to try a few reboots just to make sure that the problem is gone.

To be doubly sure and eliminate any other causes see this FAQ, after following it carefully you should be reasonably sure that your machine is safe and clean.

If you were to run System Restore, you might restore that message too, so hold off on that for a while.

Well, I still haven't tested if this message returns when I take the disk out. I am not near that computer now but I will be later and I'll update you with the results.

You are running Symantec Antivirus arent you?

I get the exact same thing on a few computers here, it wants something in the drive to scan for virus'.

Putting a disk in the drive will work until you take it out, then you'll have the problem again. It is only happening on 3 of ~140 PCs here, and they were all installed the same way.

If you arent using Symantec, then ignore this, but if you are, and you call them, please post the answer they give you here.

Have you tried uninstalling the drive and reinstalling it?
I remember something at my shop about 2 years ago with that same "svchost.exe" but did not get the no disk error. I will ask my guys at the shop about it, it was a virus of some sort but im not sure what we did to deal with it. Is your Zone Alarm giving you messages about that proc wanting access to the network or not?

Well, when I take out the disk the message comes back.
Regarding uninstalling the drive and reinstalling it: It is a plug-and-play drive, should I still try it?

No this is an internal DVD drive.
Changing the letter? hmmmm another interesting idea (as usual... :)). I will try that and let you know.

Go into your device manager and find the drive in the list, Right-click the drive and hit uninstall, after words reboot and it should detect the drive again and prompt for reinstall.
Hopefully this will help, as far as the problem i mentioned about the "svchost.exe" my guys at the shop remember the problem but the fix was to do a reinstall of the OS, it didnt really have anything to do with that proc that is just how one of my guys got wind of the problem, ours came from a infected comp that was mistakenly put into the work computers network and not the test area infecting all of our machines hense the reinstall to clean all the PC's. So a reinstall is a little drastic for your problem.

Funnily enough I'm suffering the same problem this morning, in similar circumstances.

I tried to run a DVD disk, but I didn't have the required application, so I took the disk out.

I put another disk in to stop the error message.

I assumed something was cached or I had link in some history or MRU list, so ran CCleaner. It made no difference.

A re-boot cured it…
