As per the title, if I try run an installer from a network share I get that error. I have to copy the file(s) to a folder on my C: drive.

This is a fresh install of Vista. This happens for any executable and for more than one account (local and domain).

I've searched t'internet for other instances of this error and found many threads but none of them apply to this circumstance (they tend to be just Registry corruptions).

Any ideas, folks?

Are you using UNC or Mapped drives?
Is it via the Windows Installer product as well?

Simon

The real world is not about exam scores, it's about ability.

Mapped drives.

No, just browing to the file and double-clicking.

This is related to UAC and I don't know of a good way around it. And I don't recommend turning off UAC. I use batch files to copy the software to a temp folder on the machine, run the installation and then delete the copy. It's connected to the fact that when the user credentials are elevated by UAC, the 'elevated' user does not have the same available network connections -therefore the path to the installer (that you just started) no longer exists for these user credentials.

One item in Linney's first link reminded me of something that was alluded to me in the past

We do put a mitigation in place for the scenario of launching from the shell. If you double click on an executable that is either detected as a setup or is manifested as requireAdministrator, we can detect that we just elevated and suddenly are getting an error message indicating that the path was not found, and copy that drive mapping over from the original LUID.

I heard a reference way back (undocumented, unverified) that Vista does treat some installation software differently. I had forgotten about it until now and have never tried to verify it- what is the name of the application that you're trying to install and do you have any different results if it is renamed to install.exe or setup.exe (or .bat or whatever appropriate extension)?

Well, that all makes sense. Damn irritating though...

Thanks, guys!
