I have a Windows XP Pro PC that reboots instead of shutting down when I choose the "Shutdown" option after clicking START/Shutdown/Shutdown

I disabled "Quickboot" in the CMOS setup
I don't find any errors in the event log.
I tried turning off the All-in-One printer

I suspect that it is either an issue with McAfee Virus Scan or HP 4515 All-in-One printer but have not been able to pin point it to either one.

Whereas you may not have any Red X errors in the Event Viewer there could be some errors recorded as an Information entry under "Save Dump"

"Save Dump" is not a red error message it is an "Information" line which you must locate and click on to get to the extra information. See if you can use the Filter option in the Event Viewer under the View menu (while the System folder is highlighted) to search for the "Save Dump" events. All you have to do then is use the down arrow (in the resulting window) to select "Save Dump" in the "Event Source" box. Click Apply and OK, then you will have all the "Save Dump" Information lines in one place in the Event Viewer.

Now you can click on them and get those "Bug Check" details which are equivalent to the Stop Error you are experiencing.

How does it Shutdown from Safe Mode?

Shutting down from Safemode doesn't improve the situation. Still reboots instead of shutting down.

I did notice a new Entry in Event Viewer:
"The following handles in user profile hive PEGGY02\Peggy (S-1-5-21-842925246-1303643608-839522115-1003) have been closed because they were preventing the profile from unloading successfully:

svchost.exe (876)
HKCU (0x368)"

but it doesn't appear to be related to the reboot.

* I checked that microsoft KB article and there is no Roxy software and "restart on system failure" is not checked.
* I searched for all files ending in ".dmp", "minidump" etc. There is a folder called memorydump in C:\Windows but it contains nothing.

Is there some kind of dmup override setting somewhere that would prevent it from creating this file? Is it different for Windows XP Pro?

To download and install UPHClean, visit the following Microsoft Web site: This may be worth a try and at least should stop the unloading profile error.

The settings for Memory dumps are all accessed via Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties .
On the Advanced tab, click Settings under Startup and Recovery.

This is the best Shutdown troubleshooter site.

Some general things to try.

See if System Restore will get you back to a restore point before your problem with Windows.

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

If they don't work you could try repairing windows itself by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.

Apart from the above you may have some sort of hardware problem?

Rt. clicking on My Computer etc. shows me the location of the mini dump folder(%SystemRoot%\Minidump) but the "Minidump" folder doesn't show any contents. I Have explorer set to show all file and folders.

I've run "Scan disk" and "Check disk" several times with no findings.

I wondered if it is some kind of hardware issue, also, but I've always seen hardware issues show up on boot in the past so why I'm not getting any messages, I can't figure out. It acts like a CMOS setting that it telling it to reboot but I don't see any setting that matches that in the BIOs setup screen.

Would it reboot if a piece of hardware isn't seated all the way? Seems like I would get a message on boot if that were the case.

I'll run the "UPHClean" program next chance I get.
Thanks,

Setting your Bios to Safe Defaults or even checking for any Bios update may help?

Can you log off and swap users without crashing? After logging off can you then Shutdown successfully via the "Turn off computer" icon or by pressing the power off button on the machine once?

I'll try logging the user out first then shutting down. I did already try shutting down when logged on as Administrator which didn't make a difference.

Thanks
