Downloaded a new anti-virus program to attept to rid an XP desktop of a trojan. Did not like the program so I uninstalled it.

Now whenever I open a program the "Run as" window appears with the message "Which account do you want to use to run this program?" In the window there is a selection box "Protect my computer from unauthorized activity".

If I leave the box checked, programs do not open so I uncheck it.

When I select "okay", after unchecking the box, I can open the program I have chosen although some programs such as speed disk will not run regardless of what I do.

From recommendations at a couple of sites I used the Doug Knox download as well as disabling the secondary logon but neither solution was successful.

MS suggests a registry change but that also failed although their instructions were flawed.

Has anyone experienced this and how did you resolve the situation?

Thanks

Uninstalling the Anti Virus software may have left some entries in the Registry. You can see if that program's support can help you with that, you might also try a Registry cleaner, but you will need help from their support to know the exact names of keys or values to search for.

You could see if using System Restore to return to before you installed your anti virus program helps.

All exe shortcuts have a properties page which has an Advanced option where you can select to run with different credentials, if this is checked, then clicking on the shortcut will automatically bring up the RunAs option. Has this been checked?

Unfortunately I do not know the anti-virus software name.

Didn't have system restore activated.

The run with credentials boxes were were all unchecked.

Did you ever remove the Trojan that caused all this trouble in the first place?

Have a look at the other items mentioned, you could still run a Registry Cleaner to see if it finds anything.

You can run the System File checking program to check for any corruption.
Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

If they don't work you could try repairing windows itself by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.

I don't know whether this is relevant (or just my machine) but while the RunAs window is displayed on the Desktop you are unable to click on any icons (or shortcuts) on the Desktop (Arrow + hourglass shown) until the RunAs window is closed. You can still launch via the Start Run box, Taskbar or Notification area, however. Can you launch your programs through Start Run?

linney,

I reloaded the XP operating system and all is well now. FOund it to be th eonly solution to take.

Thanks for your help!
