"Requesting virus scan" slows pc?

When I open Word and Excel in Office 2000 it says "Requesting virus scan" and hangs for a very long time before opening. All the macro security settings set at low so it can't be that. I have McAfee installed but it always worked fine since 2 days ago. Any ideas?

MacAfee doesn't do this: this is the legacy of Norton AV. Have you had a trial version of NAV installed at some time?

Not as far as I know only Norton Personal Firewall, I have our company Enterprise version installed of McAfee no other trial versions...

I have seen this happen with AVG.

There is a setting to turn off the request of virus scans of all programs and documents?
