No matter how I initiate opening 'My Computer', I get the searching flashlight for about a minute before the drives appear. When I open Device Manager, the window never fills in the hardware list. The title bar and the menu bar appear and are active, but no contents. I waited over 5 minutes to verify that it wasn't just slow. Everything else seems normal with this OS. (Home). The windows open fairly promptly. (Dell Dimension 3000, Celeron 2.6/533, 256 MB ddr pc2700. I do get 2 beeps after POST, but a new stick of memory didn't get rid of that.

This computer was riddled with search bars and spyware when I received it. Girlie sites, file sharing programs etc. I ran adaware from a cd and it found 245 spyware files and removed them all. I couldn't update the definitions because of no connectivity yet. Tried running spybot and it needed a network connection to begin a scan.

I ran a version of AVG that was out of date (Feb), but it didn't find any virus for the definitions that it had.

When I plug in an ethernet cable to the onboard j45 socket, it doesn't show up as new hardware and as of now I haven't been able to connect to the internet through my router as a static IP. I will try to install a network pci card next because when I open Network Connections, nothing shows up. I would think it would still have the connection that he had at his house before he brought it over, (we have the same cable isp, cox, but like I said, there are no network connections listed. I used system restore to bring it back to when it was at his house, no help.

The only process that looks out of place in WTM is a process that is identified by a number, "20051125214317..." The "user name" column lists the registered owner of the computer, 1,276KB. I did a search for this number in Windows C: drive but it didn't get any hits.

Since Device Manager won't display any hardware, I can't confirm if the onboard network hardware is listed or has a problem. He did have a working connetion before he brought the computer over to my house.

I'm at a standstill for now, I just have a network card installaton to try, to do an online spyware scan. But I was wondering, does "MY Computer" not opening and no Device Manager having no devices displayed, sound like a virus or a spyware issue ? Or does it sound like the OS is corrupted ? He was never given an OS or restore disk when he purchaced it from Rentway, so I can't start fresh unless I get a cd for XP home. What are some common causes of 'My Computer being excessively slow when other things open normally ?

I ran sfc /scannow from a cmd prompt and it didn't display any information when it finished, so I guess it didn't find or fix anything.

Any comments or suggestions as to how to proceed will be appreciated.

Can you pull the hard drive and attach it as a "slave" in another computer? That way, you could at least run a good updated virus/spyware scan. I don't know if you can run a "HIJackthis" scan on a slave. Does anyone know if this is possible?

Hi, I slaved the drive into my Dell 8300 but as a slave there is no Network Connections, Device Manager, or My Computer. But it did enable me to run MS Spyware beta on it as an F: drive and it found 3 nasty files, Avenue Media, IST.Powerscan, and SurfACC and removed them. After this, My Computer came right up. I reinstalled it back into the 3000 and My Computer came right up now also. But for only a littel while. After a few minutes of clicking around, it took 40 or 50 seconds to come up again. Device Manager didn't show any hardware when My Computer came up normally, so I guess that's a seperate issue.

Make sure the "Plug and Play" service is started and running.

Some general things to try.

Try Safe Mode (Do you have this problem in Safe Mode?), or in another user profile?.

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

If they don't work you could try repairing windows by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.

Hi Linney, thx for the reply and good suggestions. My P&P was service was running and it was in automatic. I had tried sfc /scannow as well as checkdisk before. Adaware (outdated) found 245 spyware files and removed them all. I also was able to slave the drive in to a good machine and Microsoft beta found 3 really nasty spyware files, Surf, ist, and AvenueMedia. It was the first time MS beta found anything on any of my machines. Still no help. But read below.

Using informaton at annoyances.org, which was a referral by Ron in the Dell XP forum, ("no items in Device Manager")someone suggested removing the program ConTextPlus. Which amazingly was on this computer. How'd he know ?! I removed it with add/remove prog and to my great delight, I got my Device Manager items back, solved the "My Computer" opening slowly problem, and also fixed my Network Connections problem, which was no connection icon. For some reason, the last 2 weren't fixed until I had rebooted a few times. (?)

Here is a great thread that I'd like to share with anyone with these problems. At the end of this long thread is also information about AproprosFix.exe which has also been a life saver to alot of people. This seems to be a problem with many people using XP as the length of the tread shows.

I suggest you to run "Ultimate Boot CD" and make some harddrive tests...

By the way, I had a very slow PC and I reinstalled Windows. Now it starts in 30 seconds! But this methode is the last one you should use because of the time a reinstallation takes. And also because you have to save your files before the installation and copy them when the system is clean... Thw way I saved my files was a very easy one: I changed the harddrive to "slave" and put it on an other computer...

Good luck :)
