Hi all, I have a strange problem with a computer running Win 2K Server Service Pack 3, dual Xeon 2.0 GHz processors, and 1 GB of RAM. When I log onto the machine as network administrator, I get the following problems:
1) I cannot scan the hard drive using Norton AntiVirus (when I start the scan, it immediately stops with a message saying the scan was stopped by the user)
2) I cannot perform a Live Update in Norton Antivirus - when the process tries to connect to Symantec's web site to get the new definition files, no connection is made and the process hangs
3) When I open "My Computer", I can see the contents of the C: drive, along with the other drives. I can open some of the folders on C:, including the Documents and Settings folder, but I cannot open the Program Files folder. When I try to open the PF folder, I get a blank window where the contents of the PF folder would normally be displayed, along with the hourglass icon. Nothing more happens until I click X to close the window, at which point I get an error message saying "This program is not responding." The desktop screen then goes completely blank for a couple seconds before the desktop icons and status bar return. I also encounter a similar problem acessing the Program Files folder when I try to use Windows Explorer.
4) When I open Internet Explorer, I get no response from any web site I try to access - it's as if the machine has no valid Internet connection.
When I reboot the machine into Safe Mode with Networking, everything works fine - I can run NAV and update the definition files, open the Program Files folder in "My Computer" or Windows Explorer, and browse anywhere on the Web in Internet Explorer.
I ran an antivirus scan (in Safe Mode) and found no problems, and I also ran two popular anti-spyware/malware programs, which turned up some minor issues (tracking cookies and an Alexis-related piece of malware, all of which were successfully removed). After I rebooted the machine and ran the scans again, with no issues being reported, I rebooted once more into Normal Mode - and still had the same issues noted above. There are no firewalls on this machine (they're on the next server upstream), and invoking the "Last Known Good Configuration" option did not help.
I have no idea where to begin searching the forums for help with this issue, so if anyone can point me in the right direction, I'll greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance!
