"Disk or Network Error" on Split Database

My office has a database that we all use to track client information. The database is split, with the back end on the server and an identical front end on each local machine. The backend and all front ends are in the Access 2000 format.

Three different machines use the file, but only one (mine) has a serious problem. Every few minutes, I get a "disk or Network Error" and the database goes FUBAR. I have to exit out and go back in.

The only significant difference between the machines is that I'm using Windows & Office XP, while they're using Windows & Access 2000. (Mine's also slower... an 866, while they're running 2.4 chips).

We tried converting my front end to XP format, replacing my network card, checking my network signal all along the line to the server, installing Access 2000 on my machine instead, changing all the timeout settings to their maximum, and making sure that "no locks" was selevcted for record locking. None of this had any effect.

Periodically, I will get the above error, then we will be unable to use the back end at all... first it comes up as being open exclusively by me on my machine (which it isn't), and then it gets corrupted and we have to restore from backup.

All our software and OS's are fully updated, with no bugs or spyware in sight. This is getting really frustrating... does anybody have a solution?

Hi

I have come across this problem perhaps 4 or 5 times, each time Hardware people have said it was software problem, but each time it has been a hardware problem, 3 times it was the NIC (ie changing the NIC fixed it), the other times it was poor Network speed eg Network load.

Not sure that helps you but.. thats my experience

Thanks, Ken... I thought along similar lines at fist as well. Unfortunately, I replaced the NIC to no effect, and there wasn't any signal or traffic problem on the network. The database occasionally srashes altogether, error reporting and all, and I just don't think that points to hardware. So while that was my first thought, it seems clear.

Hi

Could be the (lack) or speed / resources on your Pc perhaps if everyone else is running OK?

Another good thought, but I think I eliminated it. I've been keeping the Task Manager open in the system tray, and when I get the error, my processor and memory loads are typically low. And again, my network administrator and I performed a similar trick where he watched the network traffic for me, with the same result. Besides, if it was network traffic, the other three users would lose the connection as well.

It's certainly poossible there's something I'm missing here... I'm just not sure what.
