One of our users is getting the following error message on his Windows 98 SE PC: "3COM EuSynth: ADI/ICH Hardware not present". 3COM EuSynth will be unavailable". Some of the message boards on the Internet indicated that DirectX could be the problem. He has DirectX 9 on his PC. I made sure that his virus definitions (we use Symantec) were up to date (they were) and I scanned his PC. No viruses. I checked Microsoft's site for Critical Windows updates. There were no critical updates for his PC.

The system information indicates that his network card is an "Intel Pro/100 VE" card.

Does anyone have any idea what could be causing him to get this message?

Maybe mobo doesn't have good enough chipset, or not mobo drivers not installed correctly.
this -->"ADI/ICH Hardware not present" ICH is I/O Controller Hub or (South Bridge).
Start > Run DXDIAG
t-shoot the system sounds and video and network tabs

novellmel,

At a guess, this is a a PC with an Intel 810e chipset (possibly with SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio) and a 3Com NIC (possibly a 3C905C-TX).

If so then this combo usually works fine... until DirectX 9 is installed and has a problem with 3Com's ICH Synth service.

Try CTRL+ALT+DEL to see if 'eusexe.exe' is running. It's the executable for 3Com's ICH Synth service. If it's running then this is the culprit. (Actually, it's not, but it is the reason for the error.)

Perhaps the easiest way to correct this is to:
1) Download and install Mike Linn's excellent freeware StartUp Control Panel utility (2) Run his 'StartUp Control Panel' utility.
3) Disable the ICH Synth service on the 'Services' tab.
4) Re-boot.

Hope this helps...

Rick
